It’s the 14th today which reminds me of another 14 about 5 years ago ………..
14!!!!! Fourteen!!!!! Quatorze???? 14!!!
The cleared out living-dining room area stripped but for couch chairs/piano/ is filled with teens!
Father and mother are in and out of the party area or just near by in the kitchen but the teens have grown up with these parents so don’t seem to notice the parents are there.
Thankfully mom and dad are still invited for the opening of gifts (mostly money to the Birthday Teen’s delight!) and they are still invited to bring out the Birthday cake.
There are a couple of rounds of “Truth or Dare” and a game called ‘”Would You Rather” which consists of asking someone a choice of impossible questions like; would you rather be in a cage with a lion? Or in an elevator with a snake? And of course there are some contortions with the ever popular game “Twister”. Lots of laughs and lots of music and enough flashes from digital cameras to give a comatose person an epileptic seizure!
All the same teens have been at this child’s Birthday parties since the child was six.
Things are a little different though from the parties when mom and dad had to help these same kids open their juice boxes or zip up their coats. Now the boys, all on the hockey team are all 6 feet tall and as the parents examine the discarded foot wear by the door, they realize how much they have grown as apparently they now have large enough feet to assist a small Cuban family to stow away to Florida in their sneakers!
Though they have grown these boys would still make their mothers proud as they say goodnight and “thank you” to “this” mother.
As the parents close the door on one of the last guests to go; the Birthday Teen and her usual posse run upstairs to put on pyjamas and rehash the evenings highlights. The mother proceeds with clean up and the father commences to make banana muffins for the morning as how could he resist 3 girls pleading him to go forth and bake?
The mom and dad slip in to bed, their minds wander back to that blessed day 14 years ago when they held the teen in their arms for the first time and are reminded that though it is the teen’s Birthday it is the parents who continue to receive the gift.
